Mahogany secretary with bookcase; serpentine pediment with central eagle finial above a molded cornice; glazed doors with geometric panes and inlay around the edges; roll-top desk with inlay around drawer edges; tapered square legs with geometric inlay and spade feet.

Mahogany; tulip poplar; yellow pine; oak.

John Aitken (Aikin) was born in Dulheath, Scotland. He was active as a cabinetmaker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from ca. 1790 to ca. 1800. He worked in partnership with William Cocks in the early 1790s in the firm Cocks & Co. Aitken made a number of pieces for George Washington in February and March, 1797.
